This from Joe Berlant on 12/21:

"Andy Porter has been diagnosed with a cancerous ampullary lesion. He
will have surgery, what he called Whipple's procedure, in January which
will remove his gall bladder, the head of his pancreasand the duodenum.
The procedure is supposed to take about 10 hours. He
understands that this has been caught fairly early and he is
optimistic about his recovery. He does not know where he will have the
procedure performed.

"He says that he has done more work in the past week and a half than in
some time, cleaning things up and disposing of items he had long meant
to get rid of. He was quite cheerful when I talked to him tonight.

"This information is public knowledge. Feel free to pass it along to
other friends of Andy."
