That would have made him 14 or 15 or 16 when he joined the Army in the
early '50s and was posted in Japan.  I just can't believe that.  I
believe that when he returned to the DC area circa 1956 -- the year I
was 18, and I was born in February, 1938 -- he was in his early
mid-20s.  He certainly was older than 19.  At that point he'd served a
three or four-year stint in the Army.  It was on his return that I first
met him, but I was aware of him as a fan during most of the period he
was in Japan,  He had joined WSFA before being posted overseas, but I
don't have access to the membership records that would tell me when that
was.
