I assume folks keep their emails.) OK, I'll swap out ENEMY MINE in favor of DAMNATION ALLEY (based on a Zelazny story). SERENITY was a book before it was a TV series? Who wrote it? One movie in favor of my point: the 1984 version of DUNE, not only a bad movie, but also whose very mention causes old WSFAns to wince. I've often thought it would be useful for someone to do a reprint anthology of novellas that are light on special effects, but very visual and title it something like "NEEDS TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE." Hollywood producers are nothing if not lazy and plodding (yes, even Trevor Macy) which is why they are suddenly hot for turning comics into film. It's already story-boarded, and the visuals are already mapped out, and by artists. Just understand: I'm not happy about good books turning into bad movies. For personal reasons, I'd like a giant coconut to hit George Lucas on the head so he'd wake up and say, "The only good STAR WARS movie I did was largely done by Leigh Brackett, who was a great science fiction author. Why don't I get cracking reading books by good science fiction authors and see if I can make a decent movie again!" Instead we get I, ROBOT and THE BICENTENNIAL MAN. -- Eva Whitley www.evawhitley.net We are the people who run this country. We are the deciders. And every single day, every single one of us needs to step outside and take some action to help stop this war. Raise hell. Think of something to make the ridiculous look ridiculous. Make our troops know we're for them and trying to get them out of there. 11 Jan. 2007, Molly Ivins' last column. RIP
