"Is so," I said. "What else could it be?" "It so ugly," Da said. "No," I protested. "It is a nice kitten, just different." "It got yellow feathers," Da said. "It doesn't fly!" I said. "It got a beak," Da said. "But it acts like Kitty is its mother," I pointed out. "So it a very dumb bird," Da said. That's why we named the ugly kitten Dodo. Later, Da was cleaning the floor at the school where he worked and told some professor there about the ugly kitten. Da said the professor got very excited so Da said he'd bring Dodo in the next day for a checkup. But it was too late. Our dog Spot had got at him when I was in school. Spot sometimes chased Kitty or her kittens around. But this was the first time he ate one. We said, "Bad dog" to Spot and buried the remains. The professor guy came by that weekend and wanted to dig Dodo up, but we forgot where we planted him. He left one very sad professor. So that was the end of the ugly kitten. Samuel Lubell wrote: >
