The site I looked at ranks Maryland at 15th and Virginia at 11th, in terms of taxes. (They didn't list DC.) (I can't remember the site, but when I find it again I'll post a URL.) We thought Maryland was more highly taxed than PA but after figuring in all the local taxes (versus Maryland using a "piggyback" tax), they're roughly equal. I didn't think to look at the ranking for PA but that was the reasoning while house-hunting. Also, areas with better schools tend to have higher taxes, but areas with better schools tend to have more valuable houses. *You* may not factor in good schools when house-hunting but a lot of people do.--Eva Whitley
