Spammers use all sorts of illegal and legal methods to collect
addresses, as you know. All it would have taken is for someone
system to get infected by a harvester virus or worm and have their
mailboxes or address lists scanned, or for someone to hack into an
ISP somewhere, or for some ISP employee somewhere to be selling
addresses from the "mail stream". If the address ever appeared on
any public web site, that would do it too.

Another way this can happen is if someone on the list gets "zombied"
and their system is turned into a spam sender.
