My own rule nowadays is to *never* make domain arrangements through a
hosting company.  Kind of along the same lines as never having a credit
card from any organization where I have assets.

There are companies that specialize in domain registration, and one is
better off sticking with them.  On advice from Karl Ginter, I've been
using EasyDNS.com, a Canadian outfit.  Pricier than many, but they're
not trying to make their money from hosting.  The flexibility and
control you get from these guys is hard to beat.  Once your domain is
set up with them (or someone like them), you can change hosting outfits
at the drop of a hat, with no concerns about ill will or reprisals.
