For a while when I was WSFA webmaster I was listing GSFC events I
thought might be of interest to WSFAns. I had found them listed in
the City Paper as open to the general public.

But when I finally tried going to one myself, they wouldn't let me in
the gate unless I showed government-issued picture ID -- which I don't
have, and wouldn't routinely carry even if I did. This is supposed to
be the US, not mid-20th-century central Europe.

I strongly suggested to them that they stop advertising events as open
to the general public, and I stopped listing all such events on WSFA's
web page.
