Well, the name sounded familiar, and I finally googled and am
now quite certain that the nominee for U.S. Secretary of the
Treasury was one of Somtow's young proteges.  His father was
a Ford Foundation representative in Thailand, and may have
funded one of Somtow's musical efforts there, shortly before
he moved to Alexandria to be hummed to by J. William
Middendorf and burst upon WSFA like a supernova cum water-
balloon[1].

I never met any of the Geithners, but their first cousin,
Nate DuPertuis, rode up to the 1980 Boston Worldcon with us.

I'm not sure whether this association should be viewed as
recommendation or caution, in regard to Mr. Geithner's
nomination....  Slightly smaller world, anyway.
