Marilyn Zimmer Bradley did a turn-around of similar magnitude and
potential for embarrassment.  Very early in her career, as a young
and somewhat brainwashed college student, she put an opinion in
a fanzine, something to the effect that no woman could write as
effectively as a man (not at all a quotation in any way, but that is
what I recall offhand as the gist of it).  The exact quotation was in
Fancyclopedia II and has been spotted in other places as well.
Between the old zines and the internet archives, there' s no dearth
of irony.
