I remember seeing an early shuttle landing and thinking that the motion
was almost identical to the landing of a rocketship in an original
Flash Gordon serial; even the scenery was the same craggy rocks.

Cool, they had a shot of the X37 landing last night on NBC national news.
It looks a lot like the old lifting body that preceeded the shuttle.  They
were testing that at White Sands without announcing it and there were all
sorts of UFO reports, when in fact it was simply a shuttle prototype.  That
one was manned.  They called it the flying bathtub, which is about what it
looked like in profile.
