My thoughts exactly.
In fact, if there were a whole track at Capclave,
starting with "this is how you hook up and read a
zip drive" and going on to "this is how you copy
the stuff off it in a format that doesn't require
the zip drive software to read it", I'd probably
attend.

There could be a lecture handout on "how to read
the electronic records you inherited, for family
of older geeks" too.  Even - or especially - when
one person knows a lot (is a geek), the rest of
the family don't necessarily have the information
they're going to need, because they depend on the
one person to do it for them.  Often that person
has the attitude that the instruction books aren't
necessary and they are lost or buried separately
from the equipment.
