Who needs a memory when you're <strikeout> an incurable packrat </strikeout> a dedicated archivist, and have a good filing system? I still have coupons for the place. It was Moonstone Bookcellars Inc. It was at 2145 Pennsylvania Avenue NW. It was open Tuesdays through Saturdays 11-6, Sundays 11-5, closed Mondays. The phone number was (202) 659-2600. At the top the coupon says "Somniorum Merratores" in gothic lettering over a dragon sitting on a planet, with "Washington's only Science Fiction and Mystery Specialty Bookshop" underneath. The dragon is the same size as the planet, which may be intended to be Earth, but the continents aren't recognizable. (I know "somniorum" means "dreams." I haven't been able to figure out what "merratores" means. Any classical scholars here?) That was indeed quite near the Gilllands', who were at 2126 Pennsylvania Avenue #3 NW until 1974. For some reason there's no mention of a website. :-) The coupon is undated. I guess that means it's still good. :-) Today, the phone number goes to a doctor. Googling the street address in an attempt to see what's there today found an online WSFA Journal from 30 years ago that mentioned the place.
