I think you missed the idea: google for coffee table model train layout.
The idea is that it's under the glass of a coffee table, *and* the plan
was to sell it in a con art show.

Under the glass of a coffee table is *not* gonna work with this. We're
talking not more than, I dunno, 5" or 6".
