Friends of the Planetarium Update-April 26, 2011

Planetarium Status, May/June Events,

Special Recognition, and 3-D Planetarium in Google Earth

Dear Planetarium Supporters,

Although we have raised more than $311,000 in contributions-from
thousands of individuals and families, as well as local businesses,
school groups, and civic organizations-our work is not yet done. We
still need nearly $92,000 by June 30th to reach our goal of $402,800 to
keep the planetarium open.

Thanks to so many of you who have helped. Keep spreading the word and
consider making a donation (or another donation) to help us achieve the
goal. Donations can be made payable to "Friends of the Planetarium" and
mailed to P.O. Box 7029, Arlington, VA 22207 OR supporters can use the
PayPal link on our website: http://www.saveplanetarium.org
<http://www.saveplanetarium.org/> (note that PayPal deducts a fee from
all on-line contributions).

3D Model of Planetarium Now in Google Earth!
n-google-earth/
>

Ryan Arnold, long-time supporter of the planetarium, and, clearly,
highly skilled in architectural illustration, has created a scale model
of the Arlington Education Center and Arlington's Planetarium
<http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&gl=us&sll=38.879942,-77.106686&sspn=0
.078576,0.236721&ie=UTF8&ll=38.888698,-77.109047&spn=0.001601,0.003296&t
=f&z=19&ecpose=38.88698509,-77.10904706,185.34,-0.001,61.424,0> for
Google Earth. Anyone on the planet with access to Google Earth can now
visit the planetarium, at least from the outside.

Ryan had these words to share about his creation:

"Not only is the complex a rather compelling specimen of modern
architecture, its design makes a strong statement. The planetarium's
prominent position at the center of those sweeping curves, and the way
the office building wraps around it along one side, clearly communicate
the high value that was placed on the planetarium and what it represents
- science education, community outreach, and inspirational learning
experiences. Cast in concrete 40 years ago, that message was meant to
last, and should inspire us to keep upholding those values now. With a
digital model in Google Earth, the two buildings now have another way
for their message to reach people."

From everyone at Friends of Arlington's Planetarium
<http://www.saveplanetarium.org/> , thank you for the magnificent work,
Ryan!
