I normally have no sound turned up on my machine at work, but I got sent
to Siberia (downstairs, no one else in the office, not my fault, office
space politics I'm told). Anywhoo, I have a new workstation I built, and
it's on CentOS 6, with KDE as the window manager. On login and logoff,
it plays a theme.

What theme, you ask?

I'd give a 99.44% confidence level that it's the first bit, before it
gets musical... of the Old Trek theme song.

It is an open question whether a "depression" can even be noticed at all
