This marked the end of the horizontal age of discovery. The vertical age of discovery, which involves mountain climbing, deep sea diving, airplanes, balloons, and, of course, space exploration, still continues. It's noteworthy that the first manned spaceflight is closer in time to 1911 than to the present.
