Two aspects to this:  Verizon provides a backup battery for the system.
It only backs up the phone line, not the internet.  Over time, that
battery gets tired, and eventually needs to be replaced. At your
expense, $30-$50, depending on where you buy it.

Secondly, if your house phone is one of those cordless wonders that
needs wall power to work, you're still out of luck, unless it is one of
the rare models that *also* has a backup battery.  An older corded phone
that plugs into the wall and gets its power from the phone connection
*will* work, as long as the Verizon backup battery holds up--6 hours at
best.
