Catalytic converters are just one of many anti-pollution devices that might be on a gas engine. There's also exhaust gas recirculation, positive crankcase ventilation, evaporative emissions controls, choke heaters, mixture tuning, air injection, timing changes, leak detectors, etc. -- Mike B.
