Just a data point here:

the Montgomery County public library has a _huge_ basement room that is as =
big or bigger than the Fairfax County library that is just for selling book=
s; it is set up like a bookstore, it is open every day the library is open,=
open until all hours, and they _still_ have to destroy thousands of books.=
=A0 There isn't room for all the books they are given and/or replace and/or=
discard because nobody has read them in five years or they are damaged.

Before anyone starts up about sending them somewhere else:
The paperwork and cost to ship them somewhere else is prohibitive, and most=
places that want books also specify that they only want brand new books, n=
othing that even looks old or has been read before.=A0 (I'd have sent boxes=
of books to flooded-out libraries in the past, but they didn't want anythi=
ng that was used.)
