According to one article, the group's website earlier had proposed a "strike" that would have only hurt the truckers involved, and the article said that website was shut down (which means there's no way to cross-check the article's statements...).  The report of the intended goals sounded rather garbled.

It seems to me that one way to reduce embarrassment over a really stupid plan is to back down and claim it was a deliberate hoax.
