Subject: [WSFA] This list is twelve years old today

This list, intended for the use of past and present members of the
Washington Science Fiction Association, is twelve years old today. I
posted the first message, announcing the list, on February 11, 2002 at
21 minutes after midnight. Walter Miles and Michael Walsh also posted
on that first day.

HTML messages and messages with attachments cannot be posted to the
list, for several reasons, including the fact that they can convey
viruses and web bugs, which can reveal your private information to
others. I suggest you turn it off for everyone, since more and more
people are deleting all such email unread. (The August 2003 Consumer
Reports magazine is one of many sources that recommends deleting HTML
email unread to cut down on spam.) If you're not sure how, see
http://www.geoapps.com/nomime.shtml

This list is not an official WSFA project, however I recommend that
anything sent to the official WSFA email list on Yahoo! also be sent
to this one, since many past and present WSFAns will have nothing to
do with Yahoo!.

72 people have posted 16,616 messages to the list, an average of 4 per
day. 2002 through 2013 averaged 12, 4, 6, 9, 4, 3, 2, 2, 2, 2, 1, and
1 messages per day, respectively. 2014 has averaged 1 message per day
so far.

There are currently 43 subscribers.

Here are all the past and present subscribers and senders, along with
the number of messages they have sent and their email address. The
email address shown is the one they receive postings on. All past
and present WSFA members (including non-subscribers) can post to the
list from any email address. Email addresses in parentheses are the
address a non-subscriber last posted from, or a former subscriber last
subscribed from, and may no longer be valid addresses.

Archives of this list are at http://KeithLynch.net/wsfa/list/. Please
do not link any public web pages to these archives, or mention them,
or the email address of this list, on any other mailing list or any
newsgroup. Please do not forward messages sent to this list to anyone
except past and present WSFA members without the permission of the
sender. (You're welcome to mention the *existence* of this list to
anyone.)

The archives are indexed by date and by sender, and also include a
list of current subscribers and their email addresses. That list
would be useful in reconstructing this list on another platform if
I'm run over by the proverbial bus.

Please keep in mind that there are no tone-of-voice or body language
cues in email, so messages can often appear much blunter than they
were intended. Please interpret messages in the best light possible,
and before sending a message please write it as if it might be read
in the worst light possible. Never post while angry.

To help keep mailboxes from overflowing, and to keep from stuffing
everyone's mailboxes with multiple copies of the same stuff over and
over again, please don't include more of the message you're replying
to than is necessary to establish context. Messages have often
contained ALL of the message they were replying to, which in turn
contained ALL of the message THAT message was replying to, several
levels deep. No matter how wonderful a message is, nobody wants to
get multiple copies of it. Thank you.

Also, please don't forward "PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW"
messages without first personally confirming that the message is both
accurate and timely. Remember, it's your own reputation on the line.

Please don't post more than one or two paragraphs from any copyrighted
source. Instead, please just post the URL. Thanks.

Any past or present WSFA member can:

* Subscribe to this list.
* Post to this list, even if they're not subscribed. And can do so
  from any email address.
* Read messages in the archives, even if they're not subscribed.

EXCEPT that I have no information on WSFA members or attendance since
2010, since no WSFA Journals, meeting minutes, or attendance data
have been posted to WFSA's website in over two years, except in the
unreadable PDF format (and even those PDF Journals stopped showing up
nearly two years ago). So anyone who may have joined in 2011 or since
cannot post to the list unless they email me first, via my current
disposable address, which can always be found at
http://KeithLynch.net/email.html, and affirm that they're WSFA members
(or ex-members). Not that I expect anyone to do so, since obviously
WSFA doesn't inform its new members of the existence of this list.
But I had been regularly downloading attendance data and updating the
list's whitelist through the end of 2010.

(More than two years ago I deleted wsfa.org from my bookmarks, as an
abandoned website. My look at the site today confirms my wisdom in
doing so. I think most people do the same with any site that's had
no usable substantive updates in over a year -- most a lot sooner
than that, even if the webmaster hung a "coming soon" sign on it
before retiring.)

Please don't post anything that you don't want to be seen by all WSFA
members, now and in the future. But don't assume that what you post
here will be seen by all WSFA members, or by any one of them in
particular.

Please don't CC any messages to non-subscribers without a good reason
for each one. WSFAns who aren't subscribed to the list do not wish to
receive email meant for all WSFAns.

Subscribes, unsubscribes, and archive updates are handled manually.
Usually within a day. Except archive updates, which are usually once
a month.
