It's understandable that Ted was upset by the Shaver mysteries.  They
were presented as non-fiction, and tended to put fandom in disrepute,
by making it look like we couldn't tell fantasy from reality.  And it
wasn't even particularly good fantasy.

Also, it sounds a lot like Scientology (which almost all of fandom
quite rightly hates), which was probably partly inspired by those
Shaver mysteries.

It's also understandable that we younger fans who weren't around in
the 40s can't get excited about it, since nobody outside fandom even
*remembers* the Shaver mysteries, so they're not likely to hold them
against us.

Speaking of Scientology, it's in today's news that Google was forced
by Scientology's attack lawyers to take down all links to XENU.COM.
It's probably wise for every prudent person to make sure they have no
links to XENU.COM, to make sure they're not in violation of the DMCA.
So be sure to tell all your friends, family, and co-workers, to
remove any links or bookmarks they may have which point to XENU.COM.
I just double-checked the online archives of this list (at
http://www.wsfa.org/list/), and they contain absolutely no links
to XENU.COM.  (Yet.)

Keith Henson is still seeking asylum in Canada, after having been
convicted in Riverside County California of threatening Scientologists
with nuclear weapons.  Now that this Arizona native (and long-time SF
fan) has shown he is willing and able to survive a Canadian winter,
perhaps he's more likely to be looked upon favorably.  He had the
foresight to spend the winter in Toronto, where one can easily spend
the whole winter indoors and underground (perhaps hobnobbing with
the Derogatory Robots).
