Elspeth is referring to the list at http://www.wsfa.org/bucconeer.htm mirrored at http://keithlynch.net/wsfa/bucconeer.htm Why the strange URL? If you follow the obvious links from our main page, you'll reach http://www.wsfa.org/members.htm which used to contain the list. But after it was spammed and several members asked to be removed from it, I replaced it with the following text: The list of WSFA members (and others) who wished to be listed, along with their e-mail addresses and web pages, has been moved to http://www.wsfa.org/X.htm Replace the X with the name of the large convention held in Baltimore in August/September of 1998. This was intended to make it easy for real fen to find, but difficult for spammers. This was two years ago. I think it has worked well. It has never been spammed again. Nor has it been found by Google or other search engines, so Google searches won't find that page. Unfortunately, the information in that list is becoming increasingly out of date. At the Maryland meeting two weeks ago, Colleen circulated an address list for members to update. Presumably she will do so again at the Virginia meeting in two weeks. Instead of having people separately update a printout of the online list, as I've done before, I'd like to replace the online list with hers. At the next meeting, I plan to make a motion that we do this with everyone on Colleen's list who doesn't opt out. Yes, street addresses and phone numbers too. Also, I think Colleen's list should be printed in the WSFA Journal. Perhaps the September issue, since it looks like that's one I won't be able to get online before the meeting, so we might as well have hardcopies for everyone. (Since the street addresses won't be in the online version, everyone will presumably want a hardcopy.) Why won't I be able to get the September issue online before the meeting? Because it looks like I will be returning from the Worldcon on September's first Friday with only enough time to shower, shave, and put on clean clothes before leaving for the WSFA meeting. It looks like I'll be taking Greyhound to and from the Worldcon, now that Amtrak has told me in no uncertain terms that if they notice I don't have "papers, please," in, say, Denver, they'll kick me out of the train there, with no refund and no way to get anywhere. Screw 'em. With that attitude toward potential customers, I hope congress does pull the plug on them. Bad enough they cost four times what an airline ticket does, for a much slower trip, and don't even provide a single free meal. -- Keith F.
