Subject: [WSFA] I made it to Worldcon

I made it! Not once in my three and a half days on Amtrak was I asked
for ID, despite their claims that I would be. I arrived here in San
Jose right on time on Tuesday evening, and I am now in the Internet
lounge at the Worldcon.

I was not paged by Pine Grove hospital, so I assume the tape drive I
FedExed them last week is working fine. Neither have I received any
email from them. The train passed within three miles of the place.

The motel I checked into did ask for ID, but accepted my saying that I
didn't have any.

During my six hour layover in Chicago, I went to the one major museum
I missed last time. The Science and Industry museum, where I walked
through the captured U-boat, and also saw the Titanic exhibit. This
was possible only because the lockers at the Chicago station are once
again available. The lockers are littered with signs about requiring
ID, but in fact they are completely automated. Expensive, though.

Here in San Jose I went to the Winchester Mystery House, which is even
more amazingly bizarre than I had expected.

Weather here is excellent. I hear that it's been raining in the DC area.

The only bad thing that's happened is that my razor, which I've used
for 24 years, disappeared. The motel maid must have taken it, which
is rather strange. I left her a 12 cent tip and a note telling her I
hope she enjoys the razor instead of a bigger tip. I am no longer in
that motel, but am sharing room 1193 in the Fairmont Hotel.

I will be leaving at about 6 am on Tuesday morning, which will be
about the time the last parties wind down, so I can skip paying
for a room for that night. The train should arrive in DC on Friday
afternoon, in plenty of time for me to get home, shower, shave, check
my email, put on clean clothes, and get to the WSFA meeting. Since
Sam says the WSFA Journal won't be out until third Friday, I will
maintain my record of having it available online before it's available
in hardcopy. Which is good, because it's unfair to those who
volunteered to only read it online to save WSFA money if the hardcopy
readers get their first.
