The Earthlink/Mindspring apology was signed by a "Larry Fine".

Before working for Earthlink, Mr. Fine worked on a variety of other
technical projects with Moe Howard and Curly Howard. The three of
them were not renowned for either their professionalism or their
competence. I've seen videos of them at work. You've probably seen
them too.

I don't know if Mr. Fine is still associated with the Howards.
Personally, I would have guessed the three of them were working
for Verio. It would explain so much.
