Baxter and Sawyer are both in my short list of "buy on sight" authors. I was surprised to discover that both novels featured present-day or near future Neanderthals, and that both novels portrayed them as being comparable to us in intelligence, and superior to us morally. It's curious how the same ideas often appear simultaneously in novels by different SF authors. -- Keith F.
