Friday afternoon I had found that Metro was running (by walking 20 minutes to the station and 20 minutes back, that being faster than trying to find intelligent life at any Metro phone number). Metro had been closed most of Thursday. Later that afternoon I phoned Sam, who also had no power (and unlike me, no water either), and we decided we might as well show up to WSFA. Even if Erica had wanted to cancel, there'd be no way to get word to everyone, even though I had enough life left in my UPS to send a quick email to everyone and to update the web page. Not everyone checks their email or the web page before leaving for WSFA, even if they have power, which I expect most WSFAns didn't. We figured, what the heck, WSFA is not electrically operated. About a dozen people showed up for a candle-lit get-together at Erica's. There was no formal meeting since there wasn't a quorum. Erica has neither electricity nor phone service, but is otherwise fine. The Gillilands said they have power, but almost everyone else there was powerless. Sam drove Wade and I back to Metro. He dropped Wade off at Greenbelt and me at Grosvernor, but Wade and I ended up on the same Orange line train anyway, as I figured we probably would. I got to ride free, since there was no power to the Grosvernor faregates. When I got home, I found that my power had come back on at 6:10 pm today, which was just 5 minutes after I had left for the meeting. Yes, someone (Lee Gilliland, I think) pointed out that it was Talk Life A Pirate Day. So of course I started talking about warez I had downloaded. -- Keith F.
