Oops.  I just wrote:

But I had forgotten that I had set up this list to turn =A3 back into
the proper £, precisely to prevent such errors.  I just took that
patch out, so that I can send this.  After sending this, I'll put it
back in, and add another patch that turns =A1 into ¡.

Also, I forgot to point out that Michael Walsh's reply which quoted
Ted White's ¡ turned it into yet another =A1, making him sound silly,
since he was describing how *not* to type =A1.

This could denegerate into an Abbott and Costello routine.
