Yesterday I went to Sam's, to work with him on getting more graphics
into the online copies of the old WSFA Journals. Issues back to April
1982 are online, but with graphics only for issues in the 1990s and
later, so far. The gap continues to increase, but this should soon
change, since my taking over as Secretary next month should slow down
my placing of old text online while speeding up Sam's placing of old
graphics online.
On the way there, I saw the first cicadas of the year. But only in
Virginia, not in Maryland. In spots they are already quite numerous,
while in other spots just a two minute walk away, they're still
completely absent. I suspect they won't remain absent for long.
Sam drove me home, so he could give me custody of the WSFA archives.
They're larger than I thought they would be. I'm still trying to
figure out where to put everything.
There's some fascinating stuff there, but it's very patchy. There's
also lots of less interesting stuff, also very patchy. We have
the 1975, 1976, 1977, and 1979 Disclave art show bid sheets, but
apparently none from earlier or later cons. (Some could be hiding
among other stuff, but certainly not ones for *all* Disclaves --
there isn't room.)
There's one copy of each of the WSFA Press books. Plus a signed Jack
Chalker paperback, which is inscribed "This copy is for WSFA, in spite
of whom I finished it, so they can donate it to the WSFA library where
no human beings will ever see it again." Not quite true, as it turns
out. (I hope Jack is reading this.)
There are two videotapes of 1994 Fast Forward programs, but none
before or since. Audio cassette tapes of meetings in the 80s.
Handwritten minutes of WSFA meetings in the 60s. ("Guests" at the
First Friday, May 5, 1961 meeting included Joe Mayhew. Tom Haughey,
who is on this list, was also present at that meeting.) Fliers for
the cancelled 1998 Disclave. A small number of blank membership
cards, apparently quite old. Handwritten minutes of WSFA meetings in
the 50s. Completed and signed membership application forms from the
80s. WSFA Journals, of course, but only going back to issue #68 in
1969. (Alexis has issues back to #1 in 1965.) A nearly complete run
of the Son of the WSFA Journal. An undated proposal that WSFA create
a website. Lots of old Disclave souvenir books. Various random
fanzines. Handwritten minutes of WSFA meetings in the 40s!
Don Miller wasn't WSFA's first secretary after all. Someone named
Roy W. Loan, Jr. was. Anyone ever heard of him?
I wonder if, in the 2060s, someone will post "Lydia Ginter wasn't
WSFA's first secretary after all. Someone named Keith Lynch was
secretary much earlier. Anyone ever heard of him?"
I plan to take a complete inventory, and print it in the WSFA Journal.
